1.1 Connecting Learning to Life with Infants and Toddlers

Presenter: Nancy Nicewonger

Title: Professional Development Instructor

Organization: First Up: Champions for Early Education

Workshop Description:
Children thrive when teachers provide high quality materials for infants and toddlers. Choosing materials that connect to a child’s home and community life bridges home and school, supports the child’s identity, allows parents to understand how to extend learning to their home and helps teachers make school an extension of home. Real world materials, including loose parts, nature items and objects found at home, can be a caring way to target cognitive learning. Teachers will apply developmentally appropriate practice to reflect on their current approach in order to devise ways to intentionally plan for interactions, routines, experiences and environments that encourage children to learn as they naturally explore and play in a caring, safe atmosphere that brings connections to the child’s life.
